iPhone Duo costs $1,999 for 256GB and $3,199 for 2TB, which makes the cheapest fold exactly $700 more than the cheapest iPhone 18 Pro Max. Our answer, drawn only from what Apple has published: it is worth the money if the 7.6-inch inner display changes what you do all day, and it is poor value for anyone buying it as a better camera.
The honest caveat first. Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9 and nobody outside Apple has lived with one, because the first units do not reach buyers until October 23. Every confident verdict on how a folding iPhone ages, including ours, is a reading of a specification sheet rather than a report from use.

What the $1,999 actually buys
The headline is screen area. Apple says the inner display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display and calls it the largest and thinnest iPhone display ever, at 1878 by 2670 pixels and 430 ppi.

The outer screen is not a token strip either. Apple puts the 5.4-inch cover display at more than 90 percent of the screen area of a standard iPhone 18 Pro, at 460 ppi, which is the part of the design that decides whether you can leave the phone shut most of the day.
Everything else is flagship parts in a new shape: the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, a Grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, IP68 to 6 meters for 30 minutes, and dual eSIM.
The case for spending the extra $700
- Split View in iOS 27 puts two apps side by side on the inner display, which is the single feature a larger phone screen has never been able to offer before.
- Apple designed the software around posed positions, so StandBy, landscape, portrait, seated and standing layouts change with how the phone is folded and propped.
- The dual battery is rated at up to 44 hours of video on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner one, so the big screen is not a battery penalty if you use it selectively.
- A custom vapor chamber gives the A20 Pro what Apple claims is 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.
- The outer Center Stage camera enables Duo-only tricks such as Smart Take and Duo Preview, which shows the subject the frame before the shutter fires.
The case against
- There is no telephoto lens. Apple lists 0.5x, 1x and 2x optical steps and a 4x optical zoom range, against 0.5x through 8x and a 16x range on the iPhone 18 Pro camera system.
- There is no variable aperture. The Duo main camera is fixed at f/1.6, so the four-stop control Apple built for the Pro is absent.
- There is no Face ID. Touch ID lives in the side button and works open or closed, but every Face ID habit you have has to be relearned.
- The inner FaceTime camera sits under the display and tops out at 1080p, against 4K Dolby Vision from the outer camera.
- It ships five weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro, and Apple Pencil support arrives later in 2026 rather than on day one.
The $700 gap, tier by tier
Apple prices both phones in four storage steps, and the gap between them does not move. This is our arithmetic on Apple Store prices published on September 9.

That flat gap is useful, because it separates two questions that buyers tend to blur together. Storage is a choice about how you shoot. The $700 is a single, constant charge for the fold, and it is the only figure you need to argue with.
Our verdict
Worth it if you already carry a tablet you barely use, read long documents on a phone, or run two apps at once often enough to resent a single column. In that case $700 buys a device category, not a spec bump.
Not worth it if photography is the reason you buy Pro iPhones. Losing the telephoto and the variable aperture to gain screen area is a straight downgrade in the one area Apple spent the most engineering on this year, as our iPhone 18 Pro launch coverage sets out.
Undecided is defensible too. Apple has published the full Duo specification and nothing else, and the honest position in September is that the spec sheet looks strong while evidence from real use does not exist.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a hinge cycle rating, a crease depth, a drop test result, battery capacity in mAh, or the amount of memory in the phone. It has also not published repair pricing for the folding display, which matters more on this iPhone than on any before it.
