M6 Mac mini vs M4 Mac mini: Here’s Everything Apple Upgraded

Apple has introduced the new M6 Mac mini with a faster processor, improved graphics, higher memory bandwidth, faster storage, and upgraded wireless connectivity. The compact desktop keeps the same 5-inch design introduced with the M4 generation, so nearly all of the meaningful changes are inside the machine.

The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of SSD storage, while the previous M4 model originally launched at $599 with the same base memory and storage capacities. Apple is taking pre-orders for the new model now, with availability starting September 22.

M6 brings a 12-core CPU and Apple’s first 2nm design

The largest upgrade comes from the M6 chip, which moves to a 2nm manufacturing process and increases the CPU from 10 cores on M4 to 12 cores. Apple has also changed the CPU configuration, using two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores.

Apple says the M6 Mac mini delivers up to 40 percent faster CPU performance than the M4 generation. The additional cores should provide the biggest improvement in sustained multithreaded workloads such as code compilation, video processing, software development, and other CPU-heavy tasks.

The M4 uses four performance cores and six efficiency cores, giving it 10 CPU cores in total, alongside 120GB/s of unified memory bandwidth.

GPU performance gets a much larger upgrade

The M6 includes a 12-core GPU compared with the M4’s 10-core GPU, but the architectural changes matter more than the additional two cores. Each M6 GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator designed to accelerate AI workloads directly through the graphics architecture.

Apple says graphics rendering with ray tracing can run up to twice as fast as on the M4 in some games. This should also benefit GPU-heavy creative applications, 3D rendering, image processing, and workloads that use machine learning alongside traditional graphics processing.

Key M6 graphics improvements include:

Memory bandwidth jumps to 170GB/s

Another significant improvement comes from unified memory bandwidth. The M6 reaches 170GB/s, up from 120GB/s on the M4, an increase of roughly 42 percent.

Higher memory bandwidth lets the CPU, GPU, and machine-learning hardware move larger amounts of data through unified memory more quickly, which becomes particularly useful when editing high-resolution media, working with large projects, running local AI models, or performing graphics-intensive workloads.

Memory capacity remains familiar, with the M6 supporting up to 32GB of unified memory.

SSD storage is now twice as fast

Apple has kept 256GB as the starting SSD capacity, but the storage itself receives a substantial performance upgrade. The new Mac mini uses storage that Apple says is twice as fast as the previous generation.

Faster SSD performance improves file transfers, application launches, project loading, swap-memory performance, and workflows that continuously read or write large files.

Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and faster Ethernet

Apple has also upgraded networking through its N1 wireless chip. The M6 Mac mini supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, replacing Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on the M4 Mac mini.

Wired networking gets an improvement as well, with 2.5Gb Ethernet now included as standard instead of Gigabit Ethernet. Buyers who need faster networking can still configure the Mac mini with 10Gb Ethernet.

The design and most ports stay the same

Apple has kept the compact enclosure introduced with the M4 generation. The Mac mini remains approximately 5 inches wide and 5 inches deep, with two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front.

The M6 version also retains three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the rear, along with HDMI and Ethernet. Thunderbolt 5 therefore remains reserved for the higher-performance Mac mini configuration rather than moving down to the standard M6 model.

For M4 Mac mini owners, the M6 generation delivers its strongest improvements in CPU performance, graphics, AI processing, memory bandwidth, SSD speed, and networking. The enclosure and basic port layout remain familiar, making this primarily a performance-focused upgrade rather than another redesign.
