Apple’s new Siri AI reaches three product lines on Monday, September 14, when iOS 27 and watchOS 27 ship as free updates. It launches in beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October, and it runs on-device and through Private Cloud Compute as part of Apple Intelligence.
The catch is that each device has different requirements, and in two of the three cases the requirement is really about the iPhone in your pocket. Here is where Siri AI works on day one and which hardware Apple says it needs. Our iOS 27 release date story has the rest of the update.

On iPhone: the base everything else depends on
On iPhone, Siri AI is part of iOS 27 and arrives with the rest of the update on September 14. Apple says Apple Intelligence runs on-device and with Private Cloud Compute, but its release does not list which iPhone models qualify, so owners of older phones should check Apple’s compatibility list when the update lands.

The iPhone 18 Pro is built for it. Its A20 Pro chip has a dual 16-core Neural Engine, 32 cores in total, that Apple says doubles the AI processing of the A19 Pro, along with Neural Accelerators in the CPU. That phone ships four days after the software, on September 18.
On Apple Watch: broad compatibility, but the iPhone matters
watchOS 27 brings Siri AI with personal context to Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. That is a wider range than a new watch purchase, so most owners from the past three years get it without new hardware. Apple says the feature is not available to users under 13.
The update requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (3rd generation), running iOS 27. Apple has not said whether the watch’s Siri AI features need an Apple Intelligence iPhone specifically, or whether the general iOS 27 requirement is enough, so that is the detail to watch for on Monday. The new Series 12 and Ultra 4 add Siri Recap conversation summaries on top, processed on the S11 chip’s Secure Exclave.
On AirPods 5: new earbuds, but the phone still decides
Hands-free Siri AI on AirPods 5 is the clearest case of the phone setting the rule. Apple says it needs iOS 27 and an Apple Intelligence iPhone, so the $129 earbuds do not add the feature on their own. Apple has not said whether earlier AirPods models gain hands-free Siri AI through iOS 27, so for now the earbuds side of the feature is tied to AirPods 5, which arrive on September 18.
The practical upshot: if your iPhone supports Apple Intelligence, September 14 gives you Siri AI on the phone and, with a compatible watch, on your wrist, and AirPods 5 extend it to your ears four days later.
