Sony WF-1000XM6 leaks, but is it going to be better than AirPods Pro 3?

Sony WF-1000XM6 leaks have started to paint a clear picture of what Sony plans to do next in the true wireless earbuds market. Early listings, regulatory filings, and insider posts all point to a launch in early 2026 with higher pricing, new AI audio features, and small design changes. At the same time, Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 already sit on the market with strong noise canceling, long battery life, and deep system features that users rely on every day.

This makes the question simple and important. When the WF-1000XM6 finally arrives, will it actually beat the AirPods Pro 3, or will it just narrow the gap in a few areas? The leaks suggest Sony wants to compete on sound quality and customization, but Apple still controls noise canceling, durability, and battery in a way Sony has not yet matched.

Here is what the leaks tell us so far, and how that compares to what AirPods Pro 3 already delivers in the real world.

Sony WF-1000XM6 leaks reveal

Retail listings and insider posts point to a late February 2026 release, with pre orders starting around mid February. Sony also appears ready to raise prices, which signals more expensive internal parts and new processing features.

The leaked details show Sony sticking close to the XM5 design while fixing a few complaints and improving the internals.

Here are the main rumored highlights:

  • Price: Around $329 in the US and about €299 in Europe
  • Design: Matte plastic instead of glossy, which helps with grip and fingerprints
  • Case: More compact pill shaped charging case
  • Water resistance: IPX4 for the earbuds
  • Tips: Foam ear tips for better passive noise isolation
  • Noise control: Active noise canceling and ambient sound modes
  • Microphones: Three external mics per earbud for calls and noise control
  • Chipset: MediaTek MT2855
  • Audio tech: DSEE Ultimate for real time AI upscaling
  • Wireless: Improved antenna gain for stronger and more stable connections

The biggest upgrade here is DSEE Ultimate. This is Sony’s AI system that upscales compressed music in real time, and for the first time it is expected to run directly on Sony’s true wireless earbuds. For Android users who stream from Spotify, YouTube, or even local files, this could make a real difference in clarity and detail.

The improved antenna and new chip also point to better stability, faster processing, and possible gains in battery life and noise canceling. Still, none of this has been tested yet, which makes these claims theoretical until real reviews arrive.

AirPods Pro 3 already delivers

AirPods Pro 3 launched in September 2025, and they did not play it safe. Apple pushed noise canceling, battery life, and sensor features far beyond the previous model, which now sets a high bar for anyone trying to compete.

Here are the most important AirPods Pro 3 specs:

  • Price: $249
  • Noise canceling: Up to 90 percent noise reduction, with foam infused tips that double the effectiveness of the previous model
  • Battery life:
    • Up to 8 hours with ANC on
    • About 8 hours and 42 minutes in real tests
    • About 6.5 hours with heart rate tracking during workouts
    • Up to 30 hours total with the charging case
  • Water and dust resistance: IP57 on both the earbuds and the case
  • Chip: Apple H2
  • Wireless: Bluetooth 5.3 and UWB
  • Audio features: Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio, expanded soundstage
  • Sensors: Heart rate tracking and live translation
  • Weight: 5.6 grams per earbud

Sound quality and real world use

Sony has always led when it comes to sound customization. With LDAC support, a detailed EQ, and the Sony Headphones app, users can fine tune their sound in a way Apple does not allow. DSEE Ultimate on the XM6 pushes this even further by using AI to improve lower quality audio streams.

Apple takes a different path. AirPods Pro 3 focuses on natural tuning, strong bass control, and features that adapt to your surroundings. Adaptive Audio blends transparency and noise canceling so the earbuds react when someone talks to you or when traffic noise appears. For iPhone users, this feels automatic and smooth.

On calls, both brands perform well, but Apple’s software driven noise handling and Adaptive mode still feels more refined in daily use.

So will the WF-1000XM6 beat AirPods Pro 3?

Right now, the answer is no. The Sony WF-1000XM6 looks like a strong upgrade over the XM5, especially for people who care about sound detail, EQ control, and Android compatibility. However, AirPods Pro 3 already leads in noise canceling, battery life, water and dust resistance, and smart features like heart rate and live translation.

Sony’s new chip and AI audio could close the gap in sound and possibly in ANC, but leaks do not show anything that clearly beats Apple’s current strengths. Until real tests prove otherwise, AirPods Pro 3 remains the better all around option, especially for iPhone users who want reliability, long battery life, and system level features that just work.

The WF-1000XM6 looks promising, but for now, it aims to catch up rather than take the crown.
