Apple Watch Series 12 comes in two sizes, 42mm and 46mm, and three case materials, aluminum, titanium and the new ceramic, for a total of eight case finishes. Apple has published one price, $399 for the aluminum model, so the choice today is mostly about size and material rather than a known dollar gap.
Every Series 12 has the same S11 chip, the same Health Sensing System, the same Readiness score and the same battery figures, up to 24 hours all day and 10 hours of outdoor workout. That makes this a more straightforward decision than it looks, and it is worth reading alongside our Series 12 preview and the event recap.
42mm vs 46mm: what actually differs
Apple’s release lists the two sizes and nothing that separates them beyond the case dimensions. It does not publish display sizes, brightness, weight or separate battery ratings for each size; the 24-hour figure is quoted for the watch as a whole.

That leaves wrist size and legibility as the reasons to pick one. The 46mm gives you a larger face for the new daytime vitals view and the Steps complication; the 42mm is the one to choose if last year’s 42mm Series 11 already felt right. Apple has not said whether the two sizes carry different prices above the $399 base.

Aluminum gets the most concrete upgrade this year. Ceramic Shield 2 replaces the Ion-X glass used on the Series 11, and Apple says it is 60 percent tougher, which closes some of the durability gap that used to justify a step up to the pricier case.
Titanium is the material Apple uses for the Hermès Series 12, in radiant gold, and both aluminum and titanium cases are 100 percent recycled. Ceramic is the new option with the two colors nobody else gets, pearl white and night blue, but Apple has not published its price, weight or front crystal.
Which Series 12 to buy
- Most people: 42mm or 46mm aluminum at $399, since the chip, sensors and battery are identical across materials and the glass is now tougher
- You want gold: light gold aluminum at $399, or radiant gold titanium if the unpublished price fits
- You want white or blue: ceramic is the only route, at a price Apple has not published
- You want Hermès: radiant gold titanium only
- You need more than 24 hours of battery: look at the Ultra 4 at $799 with up to 50 hours
Apple also has not published cellular pricing for any Series 12, so add that to the list of unknowns if you want the watch to work away from your iPhone. The Apple Upgrade lease starts at $11.99 a month over 24 months, again for the base configuration only.
Pre-orders for all sizes and materials opened today, September 9, with store availability on Friday, September 18. Titanium and ceramic prices should appear as Apple’s online store lists the configurations, and we will update this guide when they do.
