iPhone Duo costs $1,999, folds open to a 7.6-inch display, and arrives October 23. That is $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro, so the question is not whether the Duo is good, it is whether it is for you.
This is our analysis based on Apple’s press releases for the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro. Nobody outside Apple has used the phone for more than a demo yet, and Apple has not published prices above 256GB, so treat this as a first take. 5 people the iPhone Duo is for
- The reader and video watcher. The 7.6-inch inner display is, per Apple, 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen, with 120Hz ProMotion and 3000 nits outdoors.
- The multitasker. iOS 27.1 on the Duo adds Split View with two apps side by side, plus layouts that adapt to open, closed and posed positions. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support on both displays arrives later in 2026.
- The frequent traveler. Dual eSIM with two active lines, storage for eight or more profiles, support for more than 500 carriers per Apple, and two years of free satellite Messages, Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance.
- The parent photographer. Duo Preview shows the subject their own shot on the outer display, Kid Cue plays animations there to hold a child’s attention, and Smart Take fires when everyone is posed.
- The person who wants the big phone without the big pocket. Closed, the Duo is 84.1 mm wide with a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says has more than 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area.
5 people who should buy an iPhone 18 Pro instead
- The photographer. The iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP main camera has a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4 with manual controls, and a dedicated telephoto lens. The Duo has a fixed f/1.6 main camera and only an optical-quality 2x telephoto cropped from that sensor.
- The Face ID loyalist. The Duo uses Touch ID in the side button, open or closed. Its under-display inner camera does not support Face ID, and Apple has not said it will.
- The person on a budget of $1,300 or less. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 ($49.95 a month) and the Pro Max at $1,299 ($54.12 a month), against $1,999 or $83.29 a month for the Duo.
- The person who needs a phone this month. iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open September 12 and deliveries start September 18. The Duo does not ship until October 23.
- The person whose carrier still needs a physical SIM. The Duo is eSIM-only everywhere. Apple says more than 500 carriers support it, but if yours is not one of them, the iPhone 18 Pro keeps a SIM tray outside the 12 eSIM-only countries.

One more group we would tell to wait: anyone who wants to hold a foldable before spending $1,999. Apple has not published a hinge cycle rating or crease measurement, and the nano-texture finish that Apple says minimizes the visible crease is something to judge in person. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, and 28 more on October 30.
