Apple Pauses iPhone Air 2 Development With No New Launch Date

iPhone Air

Apple has delayed the release of the iPhone Air 2. According to The Information, the company told engineers and suppliers that the next iPhone Air had been taken off the schedule, with no new launch date set. The decision surprised many, as the phone was originally expected to arrive next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold.

The iPhone Air 2 was designed to be even lighter than the current model, with a larger battery and vapor chamber cooling system borrowed from the iPhone 17 Pro. Reports also hinted at a two-camera setup, an upgrade over the single-lens system on the first iPhone Air. Despite this, Apple’s move signals that development has slowed, though the project is not fully canceled. Engineers and manufacturers are still working on parts of it.

Production Lines Shut Down

The Information cites lower-than-expected sales as the main reason for the delay. Foxconn has reportedly dismantled most of its iPhone Air production lines and expects to stop all manufacturing by the end of the month. Luxshare, another supplier, already ended production in October. This rare pause in Apple’s release schedule shows how poorly the first iPhone Air has performed since launch.

When it debuted, Apple promoted the iPhone Air as a bold redesign, its thinnest phone ever at 5.6mm. But that thinness came with trade-offs: a smaller battery, a single rear camera, and a $999 starting price. Many customers didn’t see enough value, especially when the iPhone 17 Pro offered better performance and a triple-camera setup for just $100 more.

What Comes Next

Apple has struggled to make a fourth iPhone model stick. The iPhone mini and Plus both underperformed, and now the Air faces the same challenge. The company still plans to release three models next fall: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold. The regular iPhone 18 and budget-friendly iPhone 18e are expected to arrive in spring 2027.

There’s still hope for fans of the thin, light design. Sources say Apple may use this extra time to rethink the iPhone Air’s look and features. If the redesign goes smoothly, the iPhone Air 2 could return as soon as spring 2027, alongside the rest of the iPhone 18 lineup.
