Apple moved its iPhone lineup to 48MP sensors over several years. That transition now covers the main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras. The company continues to refine image quality through sensor design and software, rather than chasing higher megapixel counts each year. As a result, the jump to 200MP sits further down Apple’s roadmap.
According to an investor note earlier from Morgan Stanley, Apple is targeting 2028 for its first 200MP iPhone camera. If this timeline holds, the sensor would debut with the iPhone 21 series. A separate claim from Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station supports this view, saying Apple is still testing the technology internally, with no near-term consumer release planned.

Rivals moving faster with 200MP cameras
While Apple waits, Android brands are moving ahead. Xiaomi is expected to introduce 200MP cameras in its upcoming Xiaomi 18 series, including dual 200MP setups on higher-end models. Leaks suggest similar moves from Oppo and Vivo, with large sensors and periscope telephoto lenses already in testing.
These brands aim to use 200MP sensors for aggressive zoom and detailed photography this year or next. Apple, by contrast, appears willing to let rivals go first while it fine-tunes supply chains and image processing.
