Apple is preparing a significant update to its Studio Display lineup. Recent discoveries in macOS 26.3 code indicate the company is developing two distinct versions of the monitor rather than a single direct replacement.
Pushing Audio and Connectivity
The firmware files reveal two specific codenames: J427 and J527. Both monitors appear to share core visual upgrades like 120Hz ProMotion and HDR support. The actual hardware divergence happens with the audio and connectivity.

Let’s break it down. The J527 model features different audio drivers and supports more I/O controllers than the J427. The existing Studio Display already packs a very capable six-speaker system. Moving to even more advanced audio drivers suggests Apple wants to push the sound quality closer to a dedicated HomePod. On the connectivity front, the current model relies on three USB-C ports and one Thunderbolt 3 port. The added I/O controllers in the J527 point toward a faster and more expansive array of ports.
A Split Strategy for Release
What this really means is Apple could be preparing a standard replacement alongside a larger premium tier. It would make very little sense to sell two identical 27-inch monitors with only slight variations in speakers and ports. A 32-inch version housing the upgraded audio and expanded connectivity feels like the logical path.
The internal timelines also show a split strategy. The J427 is labeled as a 2025 product, while the J527 carries a 2026 designation. Apple has a week of announcements queued up starting Monday, with heavy expectations for new M5 MacBooks and desktop updates.
We will soon see if the base model Studio Display makes an early appearance or if Apple holds both versions back for a later launch.
