Chrome Beta on iOS now supports Gemini Live inside the browser, which lets users start live voice conversations from webpages without opening the Gemini app. The integration brings Google’s voice-based Gemini experience directly into Chrome for iPhone users.
Gemini Live supports spoken conversations with live responses and captions. Google already offers the feature through the standalone Gemini app on Android and iPhone, but Chrome now includes a built-in version that runs on top of webpages during browsing sessions.
Gemini Live opens as a floating interface in Chrome on iOS
The Gemini button in Chrome’s address bar opens a floating interface with a dedicated Gemini Live shortcut in supported TestFlight builds. Tapping it launches a compact Live window on top of the current webpage.
Chrome shows a consent screen before Gemini Live starts. The prompt includes details about microphone access, recordings, privacy handling under the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, and current Live limitations. After approval, Gemini Live starts inside Chrome and runs as a floating panel while browsing.
The interface uses a compact layout designed for smaller mobile screens. Even with live captions enabled, the panel only occupies a small portion of the display instead of taking over the entire screen. Chrome also shows “Gemini on hold” when the session becomes inactive.
Once a Live session starts, Chrome changes how the Gemini button behaves. Instead of reopening the standard Gemini interface, tapping the address bar button returns users to the active conversation. Users can still switch back to the regular Gemini interface through the pause control inside the Live panel. The floating Live bar remains visible across webpages and tabs.
During testing by The MacObserver, Gemini Live answered voice queries about current news topics and recently launched Vivo phones in India. The conversation continued across webpages without returning to the regular Gemini view. The panel also includes live captions, pause controls, a hold state, and access to Gemini in Chrome settings.
Current limitations and availability
Chrome currently shows a voice selection option, but the control did not respond during testing. The onboarding screen also states that some Gemini Live capabilities are unavailable.
Gemini Live currently works in Chrome 149 Beta for iOS through TestFlight builds. Users may need to enable a related experimental flag before Gemini Live appears. Chromium code changes already reference Gemini Live controls in Chrome’s address bar on iPhone.
Chrome on ios already offers Gemini for webpage summaries and contextual prompts. Google is also testing Gemini explanations for selected text and image remix for photos in the browser. Gemini Live now brings voice conversations directly into the browser instead of requiring the standalone Gemini app.
