“The Hurricane” uses a natural disaster to bring Nikki, Jason, their children and the wider family into the same difficult situation. With their normal routines interrupted, the characters have little choice but to rely on one another.
The crisis arrives at a sensitive point for Nikki and Jason. Kat’s return has already created uncertainty inside their home, especially as Princess and Tyler try to understand what her presence means. Nikki remains protective of the family, while Jason approaches problems with his familiar mix of optimism and improvisation.
The dangerous conditions increase the emotional pressure surrounding them. However, the episode keeps the warm and humorous style that has defined Trying since its first season. The disaster creates practical problems, awkward encounters and moments of panic, but it also gives the family an opportunity to put their disagreements aside.
As everyone comes together, Nikki and Jason once again face the reality that they cannot control every part of their children’s lives. They can offer stability, support and love, although Princess and Tyler must still form their own connection with Kat.
Kat’s return continues to affect the family
Kat arrived at Nikki and Jason’s home at the end of Season 4 after Princess spent much of the season searching for information about her biological mother. Princess had travelled, lied to her parents and even attempted to reach Mallorca as part of her search. The finale then changed the family dynamic when Kat appeared at their door.
