John Stewart walks away from the Green Lantern ring in Episode 5, so Episode 6 has to deal with the consequences of a choice that refuses the usual superhero origin story. He has the proof that Zoe was a Manhunter and has survived the battle that destroyed Rushville, but he does not accept the power that should have made him Hal Jordan’s successor.
That rejection is not a simple refusal of responsibility. John has watched Hal become consumed by protecting the ring, then felt its power himself and called the experience empty. The next episode is therefore less about whether John deserves the ring than whether he can confront the damage around him without becoming another version of Hal.

The ring stays behind while John carries the evidence
Episode 5 leaves John with two very different objects: Hal’s ring and Zoe’s crystallized heart. He relinquishes the first to Lianna, but keeps the second as proof that the Manhunter has been stopped. That split matters. John does not deny what he has learned or avoid accountability; he rejects the idea that authority is the same thing as control over a weapon.

The heart also ties him back to the Guardians and their history with the Manhunters. Zoe’s existence cannot be treated as an isolated Rushville mystery once John has physical evidence of the program’s failure. Episode 6 can widen the story without pretending the 2016 case had no consequences.
Hal’s warning becomes the immediate problem
Hal tells John that the Guardians replaced him and will replace John, too. The line is intended to sting, but it also reveals Hal’s fear that every relationship in the Corps is conditional. John’s rejection of the ring shows he hears the warning differently: he refuses to let an institution define his worth by whether he will wear it.
That does not resolve the Hal problem. Their fight, Hal’s manipulation of the Rushville conflict, and the damage done to the town leave a relationship that cannot be repaired by a handoff. Any move toward the present-day timeline will have to explain how their bond deteriorated so far.
The 2026 mystery now has room to take over
With Zoe’s identity confirmed and the 2016 hunt complete, the larger question returns: what happened to Hal in 2026, and why is the ring missing? John’s refusal is especially important because it prevents the past from giving an easy answer. He may be the natural successor, but the show has made clear that he will not accept that identity on someone else’s terms.
