The episode treats that contrast as the point of the return. Familiar casting gives the scene an emotional shorthand, then the comic-book world overturns it by placing Amy in a life defined by a DC hero rather than the Caltech setting viewers know.

Amy is an alternate-universe return
The group realizes it is trapped in a comic-book setting and eventually reaches Jay Garrick’s home. There they find Amy, who is married to Jay in this universe. Her presence confirms that familiar people can occupy entirely different lives when the characters cross worlds.
That is why the marriage should not be read as a retroactive change to Amy Farrah Fowler’s original relationship history. Episode 9’s premise allows the show to make the contrast itself the joke: a recognizable character appears, but the rules of this reality have assigned her a new partner and place.
Jay Garrick is the group’s way out
Jay initially denies being the Flash, but Stuart and the others persuade him to help. His Cosmic Treadmill is important because it offers a way to travel between universes, turning the cameo household into the point where the group finds a plausible escape route.

The group starts running on the treadmill as Mr. Freeze returns and appears to escape. But the episode ends without confirming exactly where the device has sent them. The destination remains a cliffhanger for the next episode.
