watchOS 27.2 beta 2 brings back the Apple Watch App Switcher

Apple has restored the App Switcher in watchOS 27.2 beta 2, giving Apple Watch testers a direct way to view recently used apps again. The feature returns with a new gesture instead of the earlier Digital Crown shortcut.

Apple’s watchOS 27.2 release notes do not document the change, so it should be treated as beta behavior rather than a promised public feature. Testers first reported the restored switcher after installing the second developer beta.

On the current beta, users can open Control Center with the Side button and then double-press the Side button to bring up the App Switcher. The cards provide a quick view of recent apps and let users return to one without navigating from the Home Screen.

Users should not install a developer beta solely for this feature. Beta software can affect battery life, app compatibility, and reliability, and Apple may revise the gesture or remove the switcher before the final watchOS 27.2 release. A current backup of the paired iPhone is sensible before testing any prerelease watch update.

The App Switcher’s return also does not imply that every Apple Watch problem has been addressed. Separate reports of unexpected reboots on newer watches remain limited user accounts, and Apple has not publicly connected those reports to this beta change.

If the feature remains through release candidate testing, it would give watchOS 27 users a faster way to move between active tasks without restoring the old Crown action. For now, it is best described as an unannounced improvement found in watchOS 27.2 beta 2.
