OpenAI has reportedly described weak engagement with ChatGPT inside Apple Intelligence, adding a new question mark over one of Apple’s most visible third-party AI integrations. The claim should be read as reported usage feedback, not as an Apple announcement or a measure of every user’s experience.
Apple explains that ChatGPT can be used with Siri and Writing Tools when users choose to enable the extension. Apple says Siri asks before sending a request to ChatGPT unless the user has allowed automatic sharing, which means use is optional by design.
That opt-in structure makes low usage difficult to interpret. Some users may prefer Apple’s on-device and Private Cloud Compute features, some may use the ChatGPT app directly, and others may not use generative AI features at all.

The integration is optional
On supported devices, users can manage the ChatGPT extension from Apple Intelligence and Siri settings. An account is not required for basic integration, though signing in can provide access to an existing ChatGPT account’s capabilities and limits.
Apple and OpenAI have not published a shared adoption metric for the integration. Any conclusions about demand should therefore remain limited to the reported remarks, rather than being treated as a verdict on Apple Intelligence or ChatGPT overall.
