Apple’s existing Apple TV 4K home theater audio guide confirms that two HomePod speakers can be used as a stereo pair for home theater sound. The beta finding points to an expansion of that setup rather than a replacement for Apple’s current HomePod and Apple TV requirements.
HomePod-based home theater audio sends television sound through the speakers paired with Apple TV 4K. Depending on the model and audio format, the setup can support formats including Dolby Atmos. It is a different approach from connecting a conventional AV receiver, because the Apple TV and HomePods handle the wireless relationship directly.

Apple has not yet published final tvOS 27.2 release notes confirming the feature’s exact device support, audio modes or availability. That leaves important details open, including whether older Apple TV 4K hardware and all HomePod generations will receive the same options.
Users who run the beta should expect interface and behavior changes before release. Those who rely on Apple TV for daily home theater use should wait for the public version rather than install a beta solely for one audio feature.
