Google Photos is adding a Redact pen that can blur private information before an image is shared. The tool is part of an expanded Markup editor and is designed for details such as license plates, addresses, account numbers or names visible in screenshots and photos.
Google listed Redact in its September Photos update. The same Markup refresh adds precise thickness controls for pens and highlighters, along with more fonts for text placed on an image.
Redact creates a pixelated block over the selected area. That makes it faster than moving a photo into a separate editor, but users should still inspect the saved result at full size before sending it. A missed edge or reflection can leave information readable.

More editing features arrive with Redact
Google is also introducing Moods, a set of vintage-inspired looks that adapt to each photo. Examples include 35mm film and a 2000s digital-camera style. Fifteen new Remix templates can turn photos into birthday cards, photo-booth layouts and red-carpet scenes.
The rollout is not identical on every platform. Google says the upgraded Markup tools and Moods are rolling out globally on Android. The new Remix templates are coming to Android and iOS in selected countries. Wardrobe, which catalogs clothing from a photo library, is expanding to the United States, India and Brazil on Android and iOS.
A separate Photos connection inside Gemini Spark can find and edit images from a prompt, but Google limits that integration to US Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Redact itself is presented as part of the Android Markup rollout, not as a paid AI-plan feature.
MacObserver previously examined Google Photos’ Wardrobe feature and compared Apple Photos with Google Photos. Redact is the most immediately practical addition in this batch because it addresses a common sharing risk without requiring generative editing.
