When Apple revealed the newer, slimmer Dynamic Island cutout for its premium smartphones, users were happy to see more happening at the top of the screen. A major selling point for the new iPhone 18 Pro is its ability to display up to three Live Activities at once. However, early adopters are quickly finding out that the expanded multitasking feature has a notable limit built right into the software.

The third activity slot is locked to basic system functions

If you own the newest Pro model and wonder why you rarely see three different apps running in the Dynamic Island, there is a technical reason behind it. A code explorer named pdfu discovered how the software handles these visual alerts.

It turns out that the third Live Activity spot in iOS 27 is reserved purely for system level actions. This means the third slot can only show native functions like your current music playback or your active map navigation.

You cannot have three separate third party apps sharing that space together. While the smaller camera cutout does provide more screen room, the operating system keeps tight control over what gets to use it. If you expected to track a timer, a food delivery, and a sports score all at once, you will need to keep waiting for future updates to unlock that true flexibility.
