Apple is changing how it displays system updates for people who are holding off on the newest software. Starting today, if you own an iPhone and still use the previous generation operating system, the company is placing the newest release right in front of you. You will now see the new system version prominently featured in your settings menu, which is a clear sign that it wants everyone to move forward.
The settings menu now puts the newest update front and center
If you check your software update screen today, you will notice a layout change. Version 27.0.1 is now the main option under the general update section. Previously, this spot belonged to iOS 26 versions like 26.7.1, while the newer software sat quietly at the bottom in an “also available” tab.
Now, Apple has flipped that order. The older 26.7.1 version is pushed down to the bottom of the screen. This layout swap shows that the company is actively encouraging people to upgrade rather than just offering the new system as a side option.

You are not forced to install iOS 27 just yet. You can still scroll down and choose the older update if you prefer to wait. Keeping your phone on the older path is still highly recommended if you just want recent security fixes without overhauling your entire device.
The company has not shared any official adoption numbers for the new software yet. However, with testing already underway for an upcoming iOS 27.2 update, we can safely expect more nudges to get your device on the latest system soon.
