The smartphone market in India is going through a massive cool down, and even the biggest tech giants are feeling the chill. Overall phone shipments across the country dropped 26 percent in the third quarter of 2026, marking the lowest volume for this season in ten years. While Apple saw its iPhone sales in India decline by 20 percent compared to last year, the company still managed to hold its ground better than many of its rivals.

Smartphones struggle as higher prices force buyers to wait

People are simply thinking twice before buying a new phone at the moment, reports Omdia. Cautious spending and rising retail prices pushed total shipments down to 35.8 million units. Retailers also played it safe and avoided stocking up on too much inventory before the festive season.

Because the big online sales events did not bring the usual heavy discounts, many buyers decided to hold off. This shift really hurt Chinese brands, whose combined market share fell from 75 percent last year down to 68 percent. Meanwhile, Samsung actually climbed back to the number one spot for the first time in over two years, shipping 6.7 million units by focusing heavily on premium models and strong trade-in programs.

Older devices and premium pro models keep sales moving

Even with a 20 percent drop, the Cupertino company still grabbed the fifth spot overall with 3.9 million units shipped. The brand found a clever way to keep phones moving by relying on steady demand for the base models of the iPhone 16 and 17. Since there is no base iPhone 18 this year, shoppers looking for a standard device happily bought the older versions before expected price hikes kicked in.

For the higher-end buyers, the late-quarter arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro and the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max sparked a nice wave of momentum. These expensive new releases were supported with aggressive bank cashbacks, exchange bonuses, and flexible payment plans that make upgrading feel much lighter on the wallet.

Instead of relying purely on massive shipment numbers, phone makers in India now have to work harder to convince people to upgrade. Brands that focus on better trade-in deals and premium features will be the ones that actually survive this ongoing market slump.
