The latest hardware release from Apple is bringing a major upgrade to home theater setups. The new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K now officially connects with up to four wireless speakers at the same time. This means users can finally position devices in the front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right corners of their viewing area. This layout creates an all-Apple surround sound system designed to rival traditional wired audio packages.
The new setup introduces a dedicated room filling mode
While traditional surround sound is a major selling point, the new streaming box also includes a secondary feature called “Whole Room Audio.” When you dive into the audio settings after connecting four smart speakers, you can toggle between Surround Sound and Whole Room Audio.
Unlike the directional processing used for movies and TV shows, Whole Room Audio takes a different approach. It uses standard stereo channels and spreads them across both pairs of speakers. The system cleverly assigns the channels diagonally. The front-left and rear-right speakers share the left channel, while the front-right and rear-left share the right channel. According to the company, this specific configuration helps spread sound evenly across the entire space without complex processing.

Older hardware remains stuck on two channel stereo limits
Buyers hoping to use this new four-speaker layout with older streaming boxes will be out of luck. Previous generations of the Apple TV 4K are strictly limited to pairing with just two speakers for basic stereo sound. To unlock the four-speaker capability, users must upgrade to the newly announced model.
The new streaming device launches on Friday, November 13. To complete the setup, buyers can pair it with the original HomePod or the brand new HomePod mini 2, which officially launches on October 30. Early reactions online show excitement for an easy, wire-free home theater setup, though some users note the high overall cost of buying a new streaming box alongside four separate speakers.
