When people spend two thousand dollars on a brand new smartphone, they want to know it will last. The new iPhone Duo brings a bending screen to the lineup, raising big questions about its physical durability. To find real answers, reviewer Joanna Stern built a custom testing machine and subjected the device to over 32,000 continuous bending cycles while she slept over four nights. This matches roughly a whole year of normal daily usage, giving us a clear look at how the hardware actually ages.

The titanium hinge stays strong while the screen crease worsens

The test results bring some great news for the mechanical parts of the phone. The custom 3D-printed titanium hinge remained completely sturdy and smooth throughout the entire process. Machine measurements showed the mechanism actually became slightly stiffer over time, though it felt identical to day one in human hands. This proves that the moving parts inside the new foldable can easily handle the stress of daily life.

While the metal held up perfectly, the plastic inner screen told a different story. The continuous bending caused the display crease to deepen noticeably. Reviewers noted that the groove became much more visible to the eye and much easier to feel when swiping across the glass. Testing the screen this heavily shows the natural limits of current bending displays.

Apple has not released any official durability numbers for this device. This leaves a gap in expectations when you look at rivals like Samsung, which claims its newest folding displays can survive half a million bends. Still, knowing the hinge can physically survive heavy wear should give early buyers some real peace of mind as they test out this first-generation hardware.
