Apple is not wasting any time working on its next generation of folding devices. Even though the first iPhone Duo is just now reaching the hands of buyers, the company is already exploring ways to improve the hardware. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman on a recent episode of his Power On podcast, internal teams at Apple are testing new prototypes that bring back a key security feature that was missing from the initial release.

The next folding device might feature an under display camera

The current folding phone relies on a fingerprint sensor located on the side button, much like a traditional iPad. The device has a very thin design, which did not leave enough physical space for the complex depth sensors needed for facial recognition. This hardware shift was a big adjustment for many early reviewers.

However, Apple engineers are actively working to shrink these components down. Gurman noted that early prototypes for the second version include facial recognition technology hidden right under the outer screen. This move would allow users to unlock their phone just by looking at it, without needing a large cutout on the display.

By reducing the size of the infrared camera and flood illuminator, the hardware team can fit advanced authentication into the slim folding body. You can read more about these early hardware predictions about the iPhone Duo 2 to see what else might change next year.

Apple is also considering adding a physical action button

Facial recognition is not the only hardware addition being discussed in Cupertino right now. The podcast report also mentioned that internal teams are looking at bringing the Action button over to the folding lineup. This customizable button has become a staple on standard pro models, giving users a quick way to launch the camera, turn on the flashlight, or start a voice memo. The current folding model completely skipped this helpful feature.

Testing a feature on a prototype does not guarantee it will make it to the final production line next fall. The company frequently experiments with different designs before locking in a final product. Still, it shows a clear roadmap for addressing the most common hardware complaints from the first generation. Buyers who felt held back by the side-mounted fingerprint scanner might find the perfect upgrade in next year’s model.
