Apple now sells three 14-inch MacBook Pro choices, and the gap between the cheapest and the newest is $900. The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, announced today, starts at $2,899 with an M5 Pro chip. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, announced yesterday, starts at $1,999. The existing M5 Pro model with a Liquid Retina XDR display stays in the lineup, and Apple’s specs page doesn’t list its price.
Here’s what each extra dollar buys you, using only the figures Apple publishes.

Apple’s battery figures come from its own testing in September 2026 and vary by use and configuration. Weight also varies by configuration. The PROLED XDR model’s 14.2-inch size is measured diagonally as a standard rectangle, so the viewable area is a little smaller.

The $2,899 PROLED XDR model buys you an OLED touchscreen and a lighter body
The headline upgrade is the display. Apple calls it PROLED XDR, a tandem OLED panel that reaches up to 2000 nits peak brightness for both HDR and SDR content, with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. That’s 400 nits more peak HDR brightness than the Liquid Retina XDR display on the other two models, and ten times the contrast ratio Apple lists for the M6 model. ProMotion runs from 10Hz to 120Hz, and it covers P3 and Adobe RGB, plus more than 80% of Rec. 2020.
Touch is built into the panel itself rather than layered on top. Apple redesigned the hinge so the screen stays steady when you tap it, and macOS turns touches into clicks, so your existing apps work right away. Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro and Pixelmator Pro add features made for Touch.
The body is lighter, too. Apple says the 14-inch model weighs 3 lb, half a pound less than before, and it’s 0.5 mm thinner. You also get Thunderbolt 5, support for up to three external displays with M5 Pro, and up to 24 hours of battery life. Apple doesn’t state base memory, base storage or colors for this model in its release.
The $1,999 M6 model gives you the newest chip at the lowest price
The M6 model is the value pick. You get a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core, 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of battery life, the same figure as the PROLED XDR model, and a weight of 3.4 lb.
The trade-offs are clear. The display tops out at 1600 nits peak HDR with no touch. The ports are Thunderbolt 4, not Thunderbolt 5, and you can only drive two external displays. Memory caps at 32GB.
The M5 Pro Liquid Retina XDR model sits in the middle with more memory and Thunderbolt 5
The older M5 Pro model starts with a 15-core CPU, a 16-core GPU, 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. It has Thunderbolt 5 like the PROLED XDR model, but it keeps the Liquid Retina XDR display, weighs 3.5 lb and lists up to 22 hours of video streaming. It’s the heaviest of the three. Since Apple doesn’t publish its price on the specs page, check the Apple Store before you compare it with the other two.
Who should buy the PROLED XDR model, the M6 model or the M5 Pro model
- Buy the M6 model if you want a MacBook Pro for $1,999 and don’t need more than 32GB of memory or more than two external displays. For most people, this is the one to get.
- Buy the PROLED XDR model if you edit photos or video, grade HDR footage or just want touch on a Mac. The brighter OLED panel, the lighter body and the M5 Max option justify the extra $900 for creative pros.
- Skip the M5 Pro Liquid Retina XDR model unless you find it at a big discount. The PROLED XDR model uses the same chip family and adds a better screen and touch in a lighter body.
Pre-orders for both new models open October 28, and they’re available beginning Friday, November 6.
