If you felt the first generation ultra thin smartphone left out too many key features, the upcoming iPhone Air 2 might easily change your mind. Recent hardware leaks suggest that Apple is working on three massive upgrades to fix the most common complaints. From a much larger battery to a brand new camera system, this device aims to offer a complete package without losing its signature slim profile.

A thinner display panel makes room for a bigger battery

The original iPhone Air received some criticism for its 3,150 mAh battery capacity. To fix this, Apple engineers are reportedly using a thinner 6.5-inch OLED display panel for the next generation, reports Digital Chat Station on Weibo.

This small design change frees up valuable physical space inside the chassis. The new model is expected to jump to a 3,500 mAh battery. That is an increase of about 11 percent, which should translate to noticeably longer screen time for daily use.

A redesigned face id module allows a second rear camera

One of the biggest sacrifices on the first generation model was the single camera on the back. That is going to change. Reports show that a smaller, redesigned Face ID module will give the company enough physical space to add a second lens.

Buyers can expect a new 48 MP ultra-wide camera alongside the main 48 MP shooter. This hardware bump finally brings the photography experience closer to what you find on the standard iPhone 18 lineup. Now, taking group photos and wide landscape shots will be much easier on the thin device.

The newer processor brings better speed inside a slimmer body

Powering everything is the new A20 Pro chip, built on a highly efficient 2nm process. This upgrade means the iPhone will handle heavy tasks much better while drawing less power. It is also expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18e in the spring of 2027.

Despite packing a larger battery and an extra camera, the whole phone is actually getting thinner. It will reportedly shed 0.4mm, bringing the total thickness down to just 5.2mm. This perfectly matches the earlier leaks detailing a 5.2mm slim chassis that we saw recently.

Ultimately, these changes show a willingness to listen to consumer feedback. By adding a much needed ultra-wide camera, extending the battery life, and shrinking the overall thickness, this upcoming smartphone is shaping up to be a highly practical choice. If these hardware changes turn out to be true, it will be very hard to pass up when it finally hits store shelves.
