The mystery begins after heavy weather exposes the buried remains of a child. The victim appears to have been around three or four years old and buried for roughly a decade, immediately raising the possibility that the body belongs to Maggie.
Ian refuses to stay away from the investigation even though police want him to leave the case alone. He notices evidence involving a dog near the burial site and starts searching emergency dispatch records for calls involving dogs in the area.
His investigation takes him to Mulligan, a local man who keeps dogs. Ian makes a disturbing discovery inside the kennels when he finds pajamas that he recognizes as Maggie’s. However, Mulligan explains that his dogs escaped during the storm and found the buried items. The clothing had survived because it was wrapped in plastic.
The discovery pushes Ian into another downward spiral. He starts drinking again and later gets involved with an abusive man connected to an emergency call from earlier in the episode. The confrontation turns violent, and Ian ends up arrested.
Ian finally prepares to say goodbye to Maggie
After his release, Ian begins accepting the possibility that the remains belong to Maggie. His former wife, Deb, has built another life with her partner Bill and is expecting a baby. Ian eventually agrees to join her in preparing to say goodbye to their missing daughter.
However, Episode 1 changes direction during its closing moments.
Ian’s friend Donald has a brother named Henry, who lived in Port McKenna when Maggie disappeared. Henry becomes visibly unsettled after learning about the remains, and the episode then reveals his family, including a teenage daughter who appears to be around the age Maggie would be today.
That final reveal raises an immediate question about whether Maggie actually died 11 years ago or whether someone took her and raised her under another identity.
There are no previous seasons to revisit because Last Seen is a new series. Its opening episode instead uses Ian’s history, Maggie’s disappearance and his broken relationship with Deb to establish the mystery that will drive the rest of Season 1.
Episode 2, “The Call,” continues the story as Ian becomes convinced he can force Maggie’s kidnapper into the open. What do you think happened to Maggie, and do you believe Henry’s daughter is connected to her disappearance? Let us know in the comments.
