Bernard decides to surrender and ultimately goes outside to clean, knowing that the move will draw almost everyone’s attention. His plan gives Juliette’s allies the time they need to continue working against the Safeguard. Explosions soon shake the silo as the resistance targets the infrastructure connected to the system.

Bernard does not survive his trip outside. His death closes a major character arc that began with him as one of Juliette’s strongest enemies before Season 3 gradually turned him into an unlikely ally against the larger system controlling them.

His final question is also the question hanging over the entire series: Why?

The Before Times finally reach the apocalypse

The second half moves completely into the past. Daniel Keene and Helen Drew attend an event celebrating the completed silo project, where Peter Gabriel even appears and performs “Here Comes the Flood.”

Daniel is eventually taken toward Silo 1, while Helen remains around Silo 18. Their growing suspicion becomes panic when they realize something much bigger is happening around them.

Then the sky explodes.

A nuclear detonation hits above the silo complex, forcing an emergency lockdown and sending people underground. Daniel reaches the safety of Silo 1, while Helen’s fate remains unclear after the blast.

The explosion also complicates what Season 3 previously revealed. Per Stensen had described weaponized nanotechnology as the threat behind the silo project, yet the catastrophe viewers finally witness begins with a nuclear blast.

What Episode 9 means for the Silo Season 3 finale

Season 2 ended with Juliette returning to Silo 18 as rebellion spread through the underground society. Season 3 then expanded the mystery by showing the Before Times while Juliette dealt with memory loss, the Safeguard and the increasingly powerful Algorithm.

“Farewell” brings those stories much closer together. Bernard is gone, the resistance has made its move, and viewers have finally seen the event that sends humanity underground.

Silo Season 3 concludes with Episode 10 on September 4. The finale now has several major questions to answer, including what caused the nuclear attack, whether Helen survived and whether Juliette can permanently disable the Safeguard.

What do you think happened during the attack, and can Juliette finally break the system controlling Silo 18? Let us know in the comments.
