The “ultimate evil” in American Horror Story Season 13 is not yet identified by FX, so the trailer does not support naming a confirmed villain. What it does support is a larger theory: the threat is designed to be a crossover-scale force, one that can pull characters and imagery from Coven, Murder House, Freak Show and other chapters into the same conflict.
That makes the best theory less about guessing a single familiar monster and more about asking what could make this many returning figures necessary. Ryan Murphy has described the season as a story in which characters from across the anthology come together to defeat an ultimate evil. The trailer’s job is to establish that collision, not to explain the enemy’s complete origin or rules.

The trailer promises a crossover, not a Coven sequel
The return of Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett and Emma Roberts naturally makes a Coven continuation an attractive first explanation. But Murphy has said the new season is not simply a Coven season. That matters because the footage also reaches toward other corners of the franchise, including figures associated with Murder House and Freak Show.
If the threat were limited to one old storyline, such a broad reunion would be more ornamental than necessary. The trailer instead suggests a problem that crosses the boundaries that normally keep the anthology’s worlds and eras separate. That is why the “ultimate evil” may function less like a returning antagonist and more like a force capable of exploiting every old wound.
Familiar faces could be allies, targets or both
The marketing confirms returning performers and recognizable characters. It does not confirm that all of them share a side. American Horror Story has always used unstable alliances, and a season built around legacy characters has an obvious way to raise the stakes: turn a familiar return into a complication rather than a simple victory lap.
That makes the trailer’s villain imagery deliberately slippery. Twisty, the Rubber Man and other recognizable symbols may represent the ultimate evil’s army, its victims, or memories being weaponized against the people called back to fight. The footage alone cannot settle that question.
The strongest theory is a threat built from the anthology itself
The most evidence-based prediction is that Season 13 will turn the show’s long history into part of the conflict. A villain that draws power from the franchise’s accumulated horrors would explain why a witch, a haunted-house survivor and a carnival figure can all matter at once. It would also let the season treat past stories as connected without declaring that every earlier mystery had one hidden answer.
