The ending of Animals reveals that Ramon is the person who truly saves Hector, while Mark Kimball turns the rescue into a political victory by taking credit for what happened. The final scenes also connect the kidnapping to the damage caused by Mark’s past legal work.
Spoiler warning: This article contains major spoilers for Animals.
Who was actually kidnapped in Animals?
The biggest twist arrives when Mark and Abigail discover that their son, Denny, was never kidnapped. The abductors mistakenly took Hector, the son of Ramon, who is Cecilia’s partner.

That discovery changes Mark’s position completely. He initially believes he is risking everything to save his own son, but he now has to decide whether he will still pay the $7 million ransom for someone else’s child.
Mark eventually continues with the exchange, although his plan becomes far more dangerous after Dayle Burton gets involved.
Who are the kidnappers in Animals?
The movie deliberately keeps most of the kidnappers in the background, but it leaves an important clue about the apparent leader.
Early scenes point toward James Bureaux, a struggling businessman whose life collapsed after Mark’s law firm became involved in an environmental case that damaged local businesses in the San Fernando Valley. Bills, eviction notices and divorce paperwork establish how badly Bureaux has been affected. Matt Gerald is also credited as a kidnapper named James Bureaux.
The film never gives Bureaux a long explanatory speech. Instead, these details suggest that the kidnapping grew from resentment toward Mark and the consequences of his earlier legal work.
That makes the kidnapping more personal than it initially appears. Mark built his public image around helping Los Angeles, while at least one person apparently believes those same actions destroyed his life.
What happens during the ransom exchange?
Mark takes the money to an isolated area near the Los Angeles River while Dayle and her armed associate Rand secretly follow him.
The kidnappers release Hector by sending him down a steep slope in a small cart, and Mark manages to catch him. Rand then shoots two masked kidnappers as they approach the ransom money.
Dayle believes the threat has been eliminated, but she has miscalculated.
A third kidnapper suddenly appears and shoots both Dayle and Rand. He then approaches Mark and Hector before Ramon arrives and shoots him, saving both of them.
Ramon, therefore, is the real hero of the final confrontation.
Why does Mark take credit for saving Hector?
Mark quickly realizes that telling the truth would create serious problems for Ramon.
Ramon is undocumented, and publicly admitting that he shot the kidnapper could expose him to criminal charges and immigration consequences. Mark instead constructs a different version of events in which Ramon went looking for Hector while Mark killed the final attacker himself.
Mark also takes Dayle’s phone, which contains evidence connected to what happened, and leaves her behind as she dies.
The cover-up works remarkably well for him. Mark receives probation and community service, while the public treats him as someone who risked his life to save a kidnapped child.
Does Mark win the election?
Yes. Mark wins the Los Angeles mayoral race after the rescue dramatically improves his public image, particularly among Latino voters.
Ramon eventually leaves for Mexico with Cecilia and Hector, while Mark appears in a television interview discussing the shooting.
The interview also hints that his ambitions now extend beyond Los Angeles. When the possibility of a presidential campaign comes up, Mark dismisses the suggestion, but the scene clearly shows how far the kidnapping has pushed his political career.
What does the Animals ending mean?
The final irony is that almost everyone receives something from the lie.
Ramon protects his family and escapes with money connected to the failed ransom exchange. Abigail stays with Mark despite everything they have learned about each other. Mark keeps his family, wins the election and emerges with an even stronger political future.
Yet the public version of the story is almost completely false.
The ending shows how easily Mark turns an ugly series of choices into a heroic narrative. By the final scene, he understands exactly what he is capable of, and Abigail understands it too.
Their marriage survives because both of them now see the person behind the public image. Mark also discovers that the same ability to control a story can protect his family and advance his career.
That is what gives Animals its darker final twist. Hector survives, the kidnappers are dead and Mark becomes a celebrated hero, even though the man receiving the praise is not the man who actually saved the day.
