Almost four decades after hitting the track, NASCAR driver Cole Trickle is gearing up for another lap. Paramount has officially greenlit Days of Thunder 2, bringing Tom Cruise back to the driver’s seat. This time, he is bringing major star power along for the ride. Anne Hathaway is joining the cast of the highly anticipated racing sequel, marking the first time these two actors will share the big screen.

Paramount sets a summer 2028 release for the racing sequel

The studio confirmed the movie is slated to hit theaters on June 2, 2028. Cruise and Hathaway announced the project together in a video filmed at the Daytona International Speedway. During the clip, a pregnant Hathaway joked that she needs to have her baby first before they start making the movie.

While the main plot is still under wraps, Hathaway is reportedly stepping into the role of a race team owner and engineer. Cruise will reprise his classic 1990 role as the hot-headed driver Cole Trickle. The studio chose director Jonathan Levine to guide the project, and original producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also back on board.

Just like recent blockbusters from Cruise, the film is being built for massive screens. Paramount plans to roll it out in IMAX and other premium formats so fans can feel every bit of speed on the track.

With two huge stars leading the charge and a prime summer release window locked in, the long-rumored project is finally moving forward. Paramount is betting big that audiences are ready to buckle up for another wild ride.
