The finale points toward the rest of Manhattan, meaning Maggie would have to manage new alliances and resources. Her challenge is whether she can make stability persuasive.
Negan becomes useful under someone else’s rules
Negan is positioned for a major role because he finally accepts a job defined by the community rather than by his own survival. The finale gives him a security mission after the fight, and he agrees without trying to turn the moment into a claim of personal power. That is a meaningful contrast with the version of Negan who once built authority through fear.
It is also why he remains complicated. Security can be a route back to influence, and the show should not pretend that a badge makes Negan harmless. What makes him a compelling possible leader is precisely the tension between his experience and the safeguards Maggie may need to impose.
Hershel is no longer only the person being saved
Hershel’s contribution to the rescue changes his standing in the group. He takes a real risk, helps disrupt Dillard’s operation and sees the consequences of violence at close range. That gives him a stronger voice in any future story about what the community owes its younger members.
He represents a different future. His perspective can test whether the adults are rebuilding a home or merely creating another fortified system.
Luis gives the survivors a moral measure
Luis may not have the formal role Maggie or Negan has, but the finale makes him essential. His loss and his confrontation with Renata show the human cost of Dillard’s control. A community led only by tacticians could easily lose sight of that cost; Luis keeps the story anchored in the people who paid for everyone else’s plans.
Potential Season 4 leadership would therefore work best as a coalition, not a coronation. Maggie can organize it, Negan can protect it, Hershel can challenge it and Luis can remind it what it is for.
