Lioness Season 3, Episode 1 brings Joe McNamara back into the field for a dangerous mission in Ukraine, but the biggest threat arrives much closer to home. “The Spider and the Fly” ends with Joe realizing that someone has found her family and knows exactly where she lives.
Season 3 premiered on Paramount+ on August 2, 2026, with new episodes arriving every Sunday. The season has eight episodes, with the finale scheduled for September 20.

Lioness Season 3, Episode 1 recap
Spoilers ahead for Lioness Season 3, Episode 1.
The premiere initially shows Joe enjoying a surprisingly normal morning with Neal and their daughters before she is attacked and abducted outside her home. The story then jumps back six months to explain how she reached that point.
Joe meets a Ukrainian-Russian double agent who provides intelligence on Aleksi Yurimov, a senior Russian operative positioned near the front line in Ukraine. Rather than killing Yurimov, the CIA wants him captured, turning the mission into a dangerous extraction operation inside an active war zone.
Joe travels to Donetsk with Cody Spears and the special operations team, while Cruz joins her for the mission. The battlefield combines trenches, artillery and constant drone surveillance, leaving the team with little room for error. They eventually reach Yurimov and successfully extract him, although Joe immediately questions the wider purpose of risking so many lives for one intelligence target.
Joe’s mission follows her home
The final sequence gives Episode 1 its biggest development. After Joe returns from Ukraine, two men posing as state police officers arrive at her house and attack her.
Joe reacts quickly and kills both intruders before calling for federal protection. She knows what the attack means: her identity and home have been compromised. The job she has spent years trying to keep separate from Neal and their children has now reached their front door.
That development also connects directly with Season 3’s larger story, which puts Joe against hidden networks, foreign operatives and possible betrayals while the danger increasingly reaches into her personal life.
Where Season 2 left Joe and the Lioness team
Season 2 followed Joe’s team after a U.S. congresswoman was kidnapped by a Mexican cartel connected to China. Joe recruited Army pilot Josie Carrillo as the new Lioness, while Cruz returned to help complete the mission. The operation succeeded, although Joe and several members of the team paid a heavy physical and emotional price.
Episode 1 of Season 3 quickly establishes the next problem. Joe can survive another battlefield, but keeping that battlefield away from her family is becoming almost impossible.
With Episode 2 now streaming and Episode 3 arriving August 16, Joe’s compromised identity and the mystery surrounding Yurimov are shaping the early part of the season.
