Amazon is officially moving forward with its live-action adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, and it has found the right person to lead the charge. The streaming company tapped horror director Mike Flanagan to take over the highly anticipated project starring Henry Cavill. With Flanagan bringing his dark storytelling experience to the table, fans of the grim universe finally have a solid reason to get excited about the upcoming television series.

The new director finishes early outlines and starts writing the script

Games Workshop recently shared a promising update about the live-action show. In a July financial report, CEO Kevin Rountree confirmed that Amazon brought in United Artists and Flanagan to develop the project. Flanagan, known for his recent reboot of Carrie and hits like The Haunting of Hill House, has already finished the initial story outlines. His next step is writing the actual script.

This is a massive relief for people who have been waiting for updates. The report also made it clear that Cavill is still heavily involved. He is a massive fan of the tabletop game, and his dedication to the lore is a big selling point for the fan base. His continued role should put an end to any worries about him leaving the production.

Amazon prepares an animated show while the live action develops

While the live-action series is moving forward, it will still take a few years before it hits television screens. Games Workshop noted that these types of adaptations require a lot of time to get right. However, fans will not have to wait that long to see the sci-fi universe in action.

The animated side of the franchise is moving much faster. Amazon is putting together a full animated series focused on the Space Marines, specifically the Deathwatch. Writer John Orloff is handling the story, and Blur Studio is taking care of the animation. On top of that, an episode based on the fantasy spin-off Age of Sigmar is almost ready for the second season of the Secret Level anthology show.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe has always relied on dark themes and cosmic horror to tell its stories. Bringing in a director who knows how to handle terrifying concepts is a smart move that gives this adaptation a real chance to succeed. Between Cavill guiding the lore and Flanagan setting the tone, the future of the franchise looks incredibly bright.
