Henry returns to 1924 without Julia because the standing stones take him while Julia and baby William remain in 1715. Their escape collapses during the confrontation with Arch Bug, leaving Henry injured and carrying a likely gemstone while Julia appears to lack the object needed to make the same crossing.
The episode does not present the separation as a choice. Henry believes his family is following, then wakes in his own century alone. Julia is left to understand that the stones did not accept all three travelers under the same conditions.

The escape breaks apart at the stones
Henry, Julia and William reach the stones hoping to leave the danger of 1715 behind. Arch Bug interrupts the attempt, and the struggle creates confusion at the exact moment the portal opens. Henry is wounded before he disappears.
Julia tries to move through with the baby but stays in the past. The image is cruel because the family has reached the correct place and moment, yet the mechanics of travel split them more completely than any pursuer could.
A hidden gemstone may explain Henry’s passage
The strongest clue is the blade lodged in Henry’s shoulder. A gemstone associated with the weapon may have traveled with him and paid the cost of his passage. Julia does not appear to carry an equivalent stone, which offers a practical reason her attempt fails.
That explanation remains an inference rather than a spoken rule in the premiere. Time travel in this world is not perfectly predictable, and the episode may reveal another cause. What matters immediately is that Henry had something Julia did not when the crossing occurred.
1924 is not the safe return Henry expected
Henry’s arrival in 1924 offers no clean rescue. He is taken to an Inverness psychiatric hospital, where his memories of 1715 are treated as symptoms rather than testimony. The system meant to help him instead begins attacking the memories that could lead him back.
Julia must survive with William in a century that regards them as vulnerable dependents. Henry, meanwhile, has to preserve enough of her identity to believe she exists. Their physical separation becomes a fight over memory as much as distance.
