Reacher escapes the hotel through a garbage chute, but his freedom does not last long. Tamara tells him that Ben Merrick and Mary Ellen were killed with karambits, the same type of curved blades used by Lila and Amisha. Reacher finally realizes that the two women he thought needed protection have been manipulating him.

That discovery also helps him solve another question. Anna did not send the missing flash drive to Lila. She sent it to her brother Jacob, someone she could still trust.

Before Reacher can act, police arrest him. A supposed officer later enters his cell and attempts to kill him with a poisoned dart, but Reacher turns the attack around, escapes custody and reconnects with the others.

Jacob, Tamara and Plum recover Anna’s flash drive, which contains a photograph showing Congressman Sampson, Indonesian General Putra and an unidentified man. Sampson claims the mystery man was a scientist conducting malaria research, although Reacher remains suspicious of that explanation.

Anna’s phone then leads the group to an abandoned Philadelphia restaurant connected to Ben’s torture and death. Reacher and Tamara investigate the building while Jacob and Plum work separately to identify the unknown man in the photograph.

Lila turns Jacob into leverage

The episode ends with Reacher and Tamara discovering exactly how dangerous their opponents remain.

Lila and Amisha enter the restaurant with Jacob as their hostage, with a knife held against his throat. They demand the flash drive, forcing Reacher into a direct confrontation with the people who have been controlling much of the investigation from the shadows. Plum’s location also remains unclear when the episode cuts to black.

Season 3 ended with Reacher killing Francis Xavier Quinn after dismantling his weapons operation, leaving the series free to begin a separate investigation this season. Episode 5 now pushes the Season 4 mystery toward its larger political and international connections.

“Reacher” Season 4 continues with Episode 6, “Plum Out of Luck,” on September 2. What do you think is really stored on Anna’s flash drive, and will Reacher save Jacob? Let us know in the comments.
