The latest weekend at the movie theaters brought mixed results for some of the biggest names in Hollywood. While the superhero giant “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” easily held onto the top spot for its fifth week, a highly anticipated sci-fi release crashed hard. Director Ridley Scott watched his new post-apocalyptic action drama “The Dog Stars” bomb at the domestic box office, earning just $8 million in its debut.

Despite featuring a star-studded cast including Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley, “The Dog Stars” failed to draw in big crowds. The movie tells the story of a pilot and his dog trying to survive in a ruined world after a global pandemic. It opened in fifth place across more than 3,300 theaters.
This weak debut is a serious problem for 20th Century Studios. It reportedly spent between $70 million and $100 million to make the film. The movie only pulled in an additional $11.3 million from overseas markets, putting it far behind the numbers it needs to break even. Reviews for the new release have been mixed, making a long and profitable run in theaters very unlikely.

The web-slinging hero stays on top for a fifth straight week
On the other side of the box office, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continues to crush the competition. The Marvel superhero movie easily took first place again by adding another $22.2 million to its massive haul. Even after more than a month in theaters, fans are still buying tickets to see Peter Parker swing across the screen.
Other movies also fought for a share of the weekend earnings. The comedy “Coyote vs. Acme” grabbed second place with a solid $15.5 million opening. “The Odyssey” landed in third with $14.3 million, followed closely by the horror sequel “Insidious: Out of the Further” with $10.1 million. The coming weeks will show if any new releases can finally knock the comic book hero out of the number one spot.
