Deborah Ann Woll and Luke Kirby are not joining The Testaments Season 2 in undisclosed roles. Woll will play Sylvia, a seamstress whose work places her near the Wives and daughters of Gilead’s Commanders. Kirby will play Commander Fletcher, an isolated and literal-minded man living on a farm in one of the Colonies.
Those descriptions position both characters close to important parts of Gilead that the younger leads cannot easily enter. Sylvia can observe elite households from a worker’s position, while Fletcher brings the Commanders’ authority into the agricultural Colonies.

A seamstress can therefore move information through rooms that remain closed to most people. Sylvia may hear private fears, see preparations for marriages or ceremonies and notice when an official household’s public image does not match its private condition. The casting announcement does not say whether she supports Gilead or resists it.
Luke Kirby plays Commander Fletcher
Fletcher lives as a recluse on a farm in one of Gilead’s Colonies. He is described as literal-minded, with eccentricities that have made it difficult for him to find a wife. The role suggests a Commander who does not fit comfortably into the social rituals expected of his rank.
His farm also widens the map beyond the households and training spaces central to Season 1. A Commander based in a Colony can expose how Gilead manages land, labor and punishment away from its political center. His difficulty marrying could become a vulnerability the regime tries to solve for him.
The new roles expand Season 2’s Gilead
Woll is announced as a recurring guest star, while Kirby is a guest star. Those labels indicate meaningful appearances without establishing either character as a permanent new lead. The existing story remains centered on the younger women growing up inside Gilead and Aunt Lydia’s changing position. Sylvia and Fletcher can support that story from opposite sides of the hierarchy: one works inside powerful homes without belonging to them, and the other holds formal power while remaining socially isolated. Their descriptions create access and tension without revealing the season’s larger political plot.
