What happens in Trying Season 5 Episode 4?
“The Hurricane” uses a natural disaster to bring the extended family into one place, forcing several characters to face problems they have avoided discussing.
The storm also works as a reflection of the family’s emotional situation. Kat’s sudden return has unsettled Nikki and Jason, while Princess and Tyler must process what it means to have their biological mother back in their lives.
Nikki wants to protect the children and preserve their sense of security. However, she also knows that completely shutting Kat out could create more resentment, particularly from Princess, who spent much of Season 4 searching for answers about her birth mother.
Jason approaches the situation with his usual optimism, although even he understands that the family cannot return to its previous routine without acknowledging Kat’s presence.
How does the episode connect to Season 4?
Season 4 ended with Princess discovering that Nikki had found Kat in Mallorca and kept the meeting secret. Kat then appeared outside the family’s Camden home, leaving Nikki with no way to avoid the truth.

Their decision does not immediately solve the conflict surrounding Kat. Nikki remains worried about how Kat’s involvement will affect Princess and Tyler, while the children still need time to understand what they want from their biological mother.
However, the family’s choice carries an important meaning. Nikki and Jason accept that protecting their children does not always mean controlling every part of their lives. They must give Princess and Tyler space to ask questions, express anger and form their own views about Kat.
The hurricane brings everyone physically closer, but it also pushes them toward a more honest version of family life. Kat’s arrival cannot erase Nikki and Jason’s role as parents. At the same time, Nikki and Jason cannot pretend that Kat has no connection to the children.
