Erica Ortegas leaves the Enterprise and becomes a Starfleet Academy flight instructor. The future shown in “Tomorrow’s Enterprise” also gives her the rank of captain, confirming that her career continues to advance after Pike’s command ends.
Teaching does not remove Ortegas from active flying. When the future Enterprise needs a pilot for a dangerous mission near the anomaly, Captain Kirk recruits her because she is still regarded as one of Starfleet’s best. Her new job turns her experience into something the next generation can learn.

Ortegas trades one bridge for an academy classroom
The one-year jump places James T. Kirk in command of the Enterprise and shows that several members of Pike’s crew have moved elsewhere. Ortegas has accepted a teaching position at Starfleet Academy, where her practical knowledge can shape pilots who have not yet faced the kind of crises she survived.
The move fits her established identity. Ortegas has always defined herself through flying, but the finale expands that skill beyond a single helm station. Becoming an instructor suggests Starfleet values not only her reflexes but also her judgment, discipline and ability to explain decisions made under pressure.
Kirk still trusts her with the impossible mission
Future Uhura and Scotty need to investigate the anomaly that links two points in time. Kirk brings Ortegas back because an academy assignment has not made her a desk-bound officer. She remains the pilot called when the margin for error disappears.
In the first version of events, the shuttle mission ends in disaster and both Scotty and Ortegas die. Present and future Uhura cooperate to change that result. When the timeline settles, the two officers return alive, giving Ortegas a future beyond the tragedy Uhura initially witnesses.
Her future may still change in Season 5
The finale shows a possible future, not a fixed guarantee. Saving the shuttle changes events, and present Uhura now carries knowledge that could affect later choices. Ortegas becoming an instructor is the clearest destination the episode provides, but the route there remains open for the final season.
Her promotion also gives Season 5 a meaningful exit to build toward. It rewards the confidence she developed across four seasons without separating her from the work she loves. Ortegas does not simply disappear when Kirk takes over the Enterprise. She earns a command rank and passes her expertise forward while remaining available for missions that need the best pilot in Starfleet. Is the academy the right next step for her?
