Julia most likely cannot travel through the stones because she has no gemstone at the moment of crossing. Henry does carry one, apparently connected to the blade lodged in his shoulder during the struggle, and he is the only member of the family sent back to 1924.
The premiere builds that explanation visually rather than through a complete rule. It is the clearest difference between Henry and Julia, but the episode has not confirmed that a gemstone is the only reason. The failed passage should therefore remain a strong reading, not an absolute answer.

Henry carries the missing ingredient
Julia reaches the stones with baby William and every intention of following Henry. She is not refusing the journey or turning back for someone in 1715. The separation happens despite her effort, making it a mechanical failure rather than an emotional choice.
Henry’s wound changes his circumstances at the decisive instant. If the blade contains a stone, he unknowingly has the object needed to survive the passage. Its presence would explain why the portal accepts an injured traveler while leaving Julia and the baby where they started.
The stones remain unpredictable
Time travel has never behaved like a perfectly controlled doorway. Bloodline, ability, timing, sound and the stones themselves can complicate a crossing. Carrying an infant may introduce another variable, although Episode 1 does not identify William as the cause.
The restraint matters because a later episode may reveal that the conflict with Arch Bug disrupted the attempt or that Julia requires a different condition. Declaring one permanent rule now would go beyond what the scene establishes.
Julia must solve the problem from 1715
For Julia, the practical lesson is immediate: she cannot repeat the same attempt and expect a different result. She needs a gemstone, reliable knowledge and protection for William before risking the stones again. A rushed second crossing could again separate her from the baby or leave both of them dangerously exposed to Arch Bug.
Her confession to Davina is a step toward that solution. By admitting that she comes from another time and misses Claire, Julia gives a potential ally enough truth to help her search instead of treating the stones as ordinary superstition. That honesty also gives Davina a reason to recognize the urgency behind Julia’s next request.
