In at interview at Mobile World Congress today, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray made the announcement. “We were hopeful, a year ago, that by this time, we would have a device. It’s not there yet.”

The reason? Most smartphones coming out are designed to work on higher frequency cellular bands. This range of the spectrum offers faster speeds, but not a lot of range.

On the other hand, the 600MHz is lower frequency, which means slower peak speed but bigger range. But there are no current phones that can use this range. Once a compatible smartphone comes out, 5G T-Mobile will launch in 30 cities.
