Tech fans are already looking ahead to the standard iPhone 18, and a recent design leak suggests the upcoming device might bring a major visual shakeup. While the fancy new iPhone 18 Pro models are already out in the wild, the base model is taking a little longer to arrive. Now, a supposed dummy unit reveals a fresh look that drops the smooth back we saw on last year’s iPhone 17 for something completely different. It might be the bold change Apple needs to keep its standard iPhone lineup exciting.

Dummy unit reveals a stretched out camera housing design

A well-known leaker named MajinBu recently shared a dummy unit showing off the back of the unreleased phone in a dark burgundy color. At first glance, it looks like a huge departure from what buyers are used to.

The two main cameras still sit up in the top left corner, but the actual camera bump housing stretches all the way across the upper portion of the phone. Instead of a smooth and clean back panel, the leaked dummy also shows an etched plate that exposes the internal MagSafe magnets. It is a much rougher, segmented look that moves away from the clean lines the brand normally favors.

A delayed spring launch could help boost overall sales

The company changed up its normal launch playbook this time around. Instead of dropping everything at once in September, they only released the high-end Pro tier and pushed the base model to a rumored spring 2027 launch window.

That long wait might actually pay off. The previous generation base model was incredibly popular, and the extra delay could build up a lot of hype for the next version. Even if the chunky new design takes some getting used to, the promised internal upgrades and the fresh look could easily turn it into a massive hit. Sometimes a controversial design choice is all it takes to make a familiar gadget feel new again.

While it is hard to know for sure if this dummy unit represents the final product, it shows that the design team is willing to take some risks. A segmented back and a giant camera housing might seem strange right now, but it could end up looking good once we see the real thing made out of premium glass and metal.
