AirPods 5 Noise Cancellation Has No Decibel Figure: Every Number Apple Publishes Instead

Apple publishes no decibel figure for AirPods 5 noise cancellation. It publishes no frequency range, no attenuation curve, no test method and no noise source. The only number attached to the cancellation itself is a comparison: up to 1.5x more than AirPods 4 with ANC, or up to 50 percent more noise removed, depending on which Apple page you read.

That is not unusual for Apple, which has never published an absolute noise reduction figure for any AirPods model. It does mean the one hard, absolute number Apple gives for ANC on AirPods 5 is a cost rather than a benefit: two hours of listening time.

Every ANC figure Apple publishes

The battery split is the closest thing to an instrumented figure in Apple’s materials, and it is worth noting that Apple lists different on-bud hours for two models whose earbuds are otherwise described identically. Our AirPods 5 launch report sets out both sets of numbers.

The two-hour cost of switching ANC on

On the standard $129 AirPods 5, Apple rates up to 6 hours with noise control off and up to 4 hours with ANC on. On the $149 Wireless Charging Case model, it is up to 7 hours and up to 5 hours.

Two hours, on both models, is the published price of running the feature. It is an absolute figure with a unit, which is more than the cancellation claim itself offers.

What Apple describes instead of a measurement

  • A new multiport acoustic architecture, which Apple says draws on the approach used in AirPods Pro 3.
  • Improved computational audio, with no processing figures attached.
  • The H2 chip, the same chip used in AirPods 4 with ANC and in AirPods Pro 3.
  • Dual beamforming microphones plus an inward-facing microphone, with no sensitivity or count change stated against AirPods 4 with ANC.
  • A vent system for pressure equalization, and next-generation Adaptive EQ.
  • Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation as separate named modes.

A component list is not a measurement. Every item above tells you what is inside the earbud and none of it tells you how much noise comes out the other side.

Every rung of that ladder is relative and the bottom rung has no number under it, so no amount of multiplication produces a decibel value. Anyone quoting one is not quoting Apple. The same restraint applies to the sound itself: nobody outside Apple has worn these, and we will not describe what they do to music before anyone has. The keynote live blog and the Apple Watch Series 12 announcement show where Apple did and did not attach units to its claims this year.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published decibels of reduction, a frequency range, an attenuation curve, a test method, a fit assumption, a leakage figure or a talk-time rating for AirPods 5. It has not explained why the two models list different on-bud listening times, and it has not said whether the 1.5x figure is a peak or an average.

AirPods 5 arrive in stores on Friday, September 18. iOS 27 ships free on Monday, September 14 and unlocks the Siri AI and Live Translation features, neither of which changes what the noise cancellation is rated at, because it is not rated at anything.
