Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: The Display Size Apple States in Square Millimetres

Apple does not give any current Apple Watch a diagonal-inch screen size. Its tech specs pages instead state the exact display area in square millimetres: 970 sq mm for the Series 12 42mm case, 1196 sq mm for the 46mm case, and 1245 sq mm for the Ultra 4 49mm case. All three panels share an identical 326 pixels-per-inch density despite those three different areas.

It is a genuine spec-table row, sitting under resolution and above battery life on Apple’s own pages for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, and it almost never gets quoted, because nits and case size get all the attention instead.

Why Apple uses an area figure instead of a diagonal size

A rounded-corner rectangle on a watch does not have the one clean corner-to-corner number a phone screen has, so Apple’s spec sheet states the physical area a display actually covers instead. It is the same approach Apple has used for past Watch generations, and the Series 12 and Ultra 4 tech specs pages are the only place this year’s three numbers appear; they are absent from both watches’ marketing pages.

Area grows by 28 percent, density does not move at all

Between the smallest current case and the largest, Series 12’s 42mm at 970 sq mm and Ultra 4’s 49mm at 1245 sq mm, display area rises by about 28 percent. Pixel density stays fixed at 326 ppi across every size Apple sells this year. That means Apple scaled the pixel grid up in exact proportion to the added glass rather than stretching one fixed panel design across three different cases.

The case grows faster than the screen between Series 12 and Ultra 4

Series 12, 46mm (aluminum or titanium)46 mm40 mm9.7 mm
Apple Watch Ultra 4, 49mm49 mm44 mm12 mm

Ultra 4’s case stands 49mm tall against the Series 12 46mm case’s 46mm, a 6.5 percent increase, and is noticeably deeper at 12mm against 9.7mm. Its display area, 1245 sq mm against 1196 sq mm, is only about 4.1 percent larger. Apple’s own numbers show the case growing faster than the screen inside it once you move from Series 12’s larger size to Ultra 4, without Apple stating why in either watch’s published material.

A figure missing from Apple’s own comparison tool

Apple’s Apple Watch compare tool lists peak brightness, water resistance, battery hours and chip generation side by side for Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3. It does not carry a display-area or resolution row at all. To see the square-millimetre figures above, a reader has to leave the comparison page entirely and open each watch’s own tech specs page, one at a time, which is very likely why the numbers do not get quoted together in the way peak brightness or battery hours do.

iPhone’s own tech specs pages do the opposite: they state a diagonal size in inches for every model, from the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro up, and never state a square-millimetre area at all. The two product lines measure the same basic thing, a rectangle of glass, in two different units, and neither page explains the choice.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not explained why it states Apple Watch display size in square millimetres rather than a diagonal measurement, has not published a matching area figure for Apple Watch SE 3, and has not said whether 326 ppi is an exact figure or a rounded one. Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores Friday, September 18, and the numbers above are the ones on Apple’s own tech specs pages as of this week, covered alongside Apple’s full event recap.
