iPhone Duo’s 24-Hour Battery Figure Assumes You Use Both Screens Equally

Apple’s iPhone Duo press release states “up to 24 hours” of typical use, then attaches a condition to that headline number: the figure “assumes equal inner and outer display use.” Apple prints this exact wording once, in the same release that also gives separate battery figures for each of the phone’s two screens.

No other iPhone needs this kind of footnote, because no other iPhone has two displays competing for the same battery. iPhone Duo‘s headline number is not a single measurement; it is an average built on an assumption Apple states but does not let you adjust.

What “equal use” would actually look like

Apple’s own video-playback figures show the two displays are not close to interchangeable. The outer screen is rated for up to 44 hours of video, the inner screen for up to 31 hours, a gap of 13 hours on the same task. Someone who keeps iPhone Duo folded and uses the cover screen for most of the day would reasonably expect to beat the 24-hour typical-use figure. Someone who unfolds it constantly for the larger inner display would fall short of it. Apple states the assumption behind its own number; it does not publish a formula for adjusting it toward either extreme.

Why a foldable needs this footnote and a single-screen iPhone does not

iPhone 18 Pro’s own typical-use figure, covered in Apple’s battery documentation, needs no such condition, because there is only one display drawing power for any given task. iPhone Duo‘s figure is the first typical-use battery rating on an iPhone that depends on which of two screens you happen to be looking at, and Apple’s own release is the only place that dependency is written down in one sentence.

The dual-battery system behind the number

Apple describes iPhone Duo as running a “dual-battery system, one cell per side.” That detail explains mechanically why the usage mix matters: each half of the folded phone draws from its own cell, so a display that sits idle on one side is not lending its charge to the display doing the work on the other. Compared with iPhone 18 Pro Max, which rates its own 45-hour video playback figure from a single battery and a single screen, Duo’s number is built from two separate power budgets added together under one stated assumption.

The gap holds in both directions Apple measures. Streamed video drops each figure by roughly the same margin: the outer display falls from 44 to 37 hours, the inner display from 31 to 26 hours, once the task adds a network connection instead of playing a file already on the phone. Apple states four separate numbers for what is really one activity, video watching, split across two variables, the screen in use and whether the video is streamed or stored locally, and none of the four is the number printed in the headline.

None of these charging figures is broken down by display either. Apple states them as whole-device numbers even though the typical-use figure they are refilling is explicitly a mix of two unequal screens.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published what mix of inner and outer use would push the typical-use figure above or below 24 hours, has not said whether Low Power Mode changes the assumption behind that number, and has not defined “equal use” beyond the single sentence in its September 9 release. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16, with availability Friday, October 23, and this is the only battery footnote Apple has published for the device as of this week.
