Apple's Lighter 16-Inch MacBook Pro Deserves More Attention Than Its Touchscreen

Apple’s new touchscreen MacBook Pro is grabbing headlines, but its significantly lighter design deserves just as much attention. The redesigned 16-inch model now weighs approximately 1.82kg, down from around 2.14kg, making it substantially easier to carry without sacrificing the performance and battery life professionals expect.

The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display, announced October 28, also introduces tandem OLED technology, Dynamic Island, and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. However, the weight reduction stands out as one of the most practical improvements for everyday use.

Apple’s 16-Inch MacBook Pro Is Finally Getting Lighter

Apple has reduced the laptop’s weight by approximately 320 grams, or around 15%, while making its chassis nearly a millimeter thinner.

Here’s how the new model compares with its predecessor:

According to Apple, the slimmer design comes partly from OLED’s more efficient display stack, while a redesigned thermal architecture maintains sustained performance and redirects heat away from the screen.

A More Practical Upgrade Than Touch?

The redesigned MacBook Pro also includes several improvements:

  • 2,000 nits brightness: Better visibility even in bright environments.
  • Dynamic Island: Quick access to notifications, Siri, and Live Activities.
  • M5 Pro and M5 Max: High-end performance for demanding workflows.
  • Up to 24 hours of battery life: All-day endurance despite the lighter chassis.
  • Illuminated Apple logo: A familiar design feature returns.

Touchscreen support is certainly interesting, but reducing weight without compromising cooling or battery life is arguably more valuable for professionals carrying a 16-inch laptop every day.

Apple has finally delivered the kind of MacBook Pro upgrade users can appreciate every time they pick it up.
