AirPods 5 Case Battery: 16 Hours in Reserve at $129, 17 Hours at $149

Apple publishes two battery numbers for each AirPods 5 model, one for the earbuds and one for the total with the case. Subtract the first from the second and the case reserve appears: 16 hours on the $129 AirPods 5, 17 hours on the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case.

Read that as refills rather than hours and the cheaper model looks better than the price suggests. Sixteen hours divided by a four-hour bud is four full recharges. Seventeen hours divided by a five-hour bud is a little over three. Apple never puts it that way, and the subtraction is ours, not Apple’s, but every input is from its published AirPods 5 figures.

How the reserve figure is worked out

Apple states listening time on one charge and total listening time with the case. The difference between them is what the case itself holds, so 20 hours minus four gives 16, and 22 minus five gives 17.

Apple publishes neither the reserve nor a recharge count for any AirPods case, so treat the refill numbers as arithmetic on Apple’s ratings rather than as an Apple claim. It also publishes no milliamp-hour capacity for the buds or either case.

How that compares with the rest of the AirPods line

The pattern is not unique to AirPods 5. A case reserve of roughly 16 hours has been the shape of Apple’s noise-cancelling AirPods for two generations, and the number of refills you get out of it falls as the buds themselves last longer.

AirPods Pro 3 hold the longest single session at eight hours and the fewest refills at roughly two, which is the trade Apple has made at $249. The old AirPods 4 without noise cancellation still have the largest reserve of any current case at about 25 hours.

What the numbers mean across a working day

A four-hour bud plus a 16-hour case covers a commute, a full day of calls in 90 minute stretches and an evening, provided the buds go back in the case between sessions. Apple rates five minutes in the case at about one hour of listening on both models, so a short top-up is the practical tool rather than a full charge.

The 22-hour headline attached to the $149 model is 22 hours of listening in total, not 22 hours in one sitting. Nothing Apple publishes describes a continuous session longer than seven hours, which is the ANC-off figure for the Wireless Charging Case model.

The ANC-off figures are only half published

Apple lists six hours of listening with noise control off on the standard model and seven hours on the Wireless Charging Case model, both an hour more than the equivalent AirPods 4 figure. It does not publish a total with the case for either model with ANC off.

That is a change from last year, when Apple published both states for AirPods 4 with ANC: 20 hours total with noise cancellation on and 30 hours with it off. For AirPods 5, the 20 and 22 hour totals are quoted with ANC on only, so the ANC-off reserve cannot be worked out at all. Noise cancellation was the headline of the launch, as our event recap laid out, and it is the only state Apple rates in full.

What Apple has not said

There is one caveat that changes every figure above. Apple’s press release quotes only the five-hour bud and 22-hour total and attaches them to the model with the Wireless Charging Case, while the store and product pages give the standard model four hours. If the four-hour figure is wrong and both sets of buds really do run five hours, the standard model holds 15 hours in reserve and three refills, not four. Apple has not resolved that, and has published no charge-cycle rating, no time to a full charge, and no capacity figures for either case.

Both models have been available to pre-order since September 9 and reach stores on Friday, September 18, alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and the new iPhones. iOS 27 lands on Monday, September 14, so the first full charge cycles most buyers see will be on the shipping software rather than a beta, as our iOS 27 release date coverage sets out.
