The $149 listing is the same with a case that adds a speaker for Find My and a force sensor with volume swipe. The $20 that decides whether you need a cable
The gap between the two AirPods 5 models is $20 and it buys three things: one extra hour of listening with noise cancellation, two more hours with the case, and two charging methods beyond USB-C. If you already own an Apple Watch charger, the $149 case can use it.

Those five-hour and 22-hour figures belong to the $149 model, which is worth stating because Apple’s own pages have been inconsistent about it. The standard model is four hours and 20 hours.
The battery is the part that runs out
Earbud batteries are consumable in a way that a case or a strap is not, and that is where the ownership cost of a $129 product actually sits. Apple publishes the hours in detail and publishes no figure at all for replacing a battery once those hours shorten.
What Apple does confirm is that battery service is one of the benefits included in its coverage plans, alongside accidental damage and priority support. The plan is therefore the only published route to a priced battery, and the per-device alternative has no published price.
What coverage costs on a $129 product
AppleCare One is $19.99 a month for up to three products, plus $5.99 a month for each product beyond three, and AppleCare One Family is $49.99 a month for up to six people from Monday, September 14. Across 36 months, $19.99 comes to $719.64 on our arithmetic, and one third of that is $239.88.
Set that against $129 and the arithmetic speaks for itself: three years of a one-third share costs nearly twice the buds. Adding AirPods as a fourth device at $5.99 a month is $215.64 over the same 36 months, still more than the product. Both figures are ours, and neither is a recommendation, but they explain why AirPods coverage reads very differently as part of a household plan than on its own.
The relevant eligibility rule Apple does publish for the family plan is that it covers most devices less than four years old and in good working condition, with newly purchased devices added automatically at no extra cost and the price unchanged.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published an AppleCare+ price for AirPods 5, a battery service or repair price, a colour list on the specs page, or a talk-time rating. It has not priced a cable or adapter as part of this launch either, and it has published no stock information for any market, so nothing about supply can be reported in either direction.
AirPods 5 reach stores on Friday, September 18. iOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14 and is what switches on Live Translation and hands-free Siri AI, which also need an Apple Intelligence iPhone, while an Apple Watch charger covers the $149 case and the rest of Apple’s September lineup lands the same week.
