AirPods 5 costs $129 and AirPods Max 2 costs $549, a gap of $420 inside the same product family. The odd part is that their total rated listening times with noise cancellation are almost the same, at up to 20 hours each.
The other difference is how much Apple has published. AirPods 5 arrived with a press release, a product page and a tech specs page on September 9. The AirPods Max 2 figures below come from Apple’s AirPods comparison page, and we could not match them to a standalone specs sheet for that model.

The totals nearly match, the prices do not
Twenty hours is the full rating for AirPods Max 2 because there is no battery in its case. For AirPods 5 the same 20 hours is the case-assisted figure, made up of four-hour stretches on the buds, or five-hour stretches and 22 hours in total on the $149 version.

So the two ends of Apple’s range reach the same daily total by opposite routes: one long session against several short ones with a recharge in between. Apple rates a five-minute top-up in the AirPods 5 case at around an hour of listening, which is the mechanic that makes the short sessions work.
The cheaper model has the better published rating
AirPods 5 lists IP57 for dust, sweat and water resistance on its tech specs page, an improvement on the IP54 of AirPods 4. For the over-ear models, the picture is thinner: the tech specs page for the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max lists no water resistance rating at all, and the IPX4 figure we have for AirPods Max 2 appears only on Apple’s comparison page.
That is not a claim that the $549 model is less durable. It is a claim about what Apple prints, and on this row the $129 model is the one with a number on a specs page.

Apple published six newsroom posts on September 9, covering iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, AirPods 5 and health features. Our event recap runs through all of them, and none of them is about AirPods Max.
Which one the published facts actually settle
On the evidence Apple has printed, the decision is a form-factor decision, not a specification contest. An open-ear shape that does not seal the ear canal and a set of over-ear cups are different objects, and Apple scopes its AirPods 5 noise cancellation claim to open-ear designs rather than to the whole category.
If the deciding factor is one long listening stretch, the 20-hour rating is on the $549 model. If it is a pocketable case, a published IP57 rating and the features Apple detailed on September 9, those are on the $129 and $149 models.
What Apple has not said
- Apple has published no press release for AirPods Max 2, and no announcement tying it to the September 9 event.
- We could not read a standalone AirPods Max 2 tech specs page, so its rows here are comparison-page readings and should be treated as such.
- Apple has not published whether AirPods Max 2 supports Live Translation, Adaptive Audio or Conversation Awareness, all of which it lists for AirPods 5.
- No charging times, case options or color names for AirPods Max 2 appear in the Apple pages we checked.
- No decibel measurement exists for noise cancellation on either model, so the two cannot be compared numerically on that point.
AirPods 5 has been orderable since September 9 and reaches stores on Friday, September 18, the same day as Apple Watch Series 12 and iPhone 18 Pro. iOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14, and if Apple posts support documents for either headphone model, that is the likeliest week for it.
