Anthropic just agreed to a massive $35 billion cloud computing contract with Lambda, a rising cloud provider backed directly by NVIDIA. The arrangement brings a huge amount of new computing power online to support the growing user demand for its Claude models. This massive investment shows just how much physical hardware is needed to train and operate modern artificial intelligence systems right now, especially as it prepares for a possible stock market debut.
NVIDIA controls the lease while Lambda sells computing power
The deal is structured in a very specific way. The actual data center is located in Nueces County, Texas, and is being built by a bitcoin mining company called Hut 8. Instead of Anthropic or Lambda holding the keys to the building, NVIDIA stepped in to secure the lease for the facility.
Lambda then buys the computer chips from NVIDIA, installs them in the Texas facility, and sells the cloud computing capacity to the AI developer. This puts NVIDIA in a unique spot where it acts as the chip supplier, the landlord of the building, and an investor in the middleman cloud provider.

The company needs this extra capacity because people are using Claude more than ever. Running these large language models takes incredible amounts of energy and server space. By paying for this hardware setup, it avoids the headache of building and managing a physical data center from scratch.
